On 21 May 1921, King Alfonso XIII travelled the path to mark the inauguration of the Conde del Guadalhorce hydroelectric dam. Following his visit, the path was named “Caminito del Rey”.

This work was carried out by labourers, with the need to link both reservoirs to facilitate the transport of materials and access to the power station. The path runs through the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes and is situated about 100 metres above.
