Álora: A Village That Will Surprise You
Álora is a charming village located in the province of Málaga, Spain, with a rich history dating back to prehistoric times. Throughout its past, Álora was inhabited by different civilisations, including the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, leaving a significant cultural mark on its architecture and traditions.
During the Arab period, Álora became a prosperous fortress with a strategic location for controlling the Guadalhorce Valley. However, in 1484, the Catholic Monarchs conquered the town, marking the end of the Arab era and the beginning of a new period under the Castilian crown.
Today, Álora preserves its historic charm and has become a popular tourist destination in the region. Its narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and beautiful landscapes attract visitors from all over. The impressive Álora Castle, built on Arab ruins, is one of its highlights and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.
In addition to its cultural heritage, the village is known for its agriculture, especially its olive groves and almond trees. Local products such as olive oil and almond sweets are appreciated by both locals and visitors.
Today, Álora has successfully combined the preservation of its history with sustainable tourism development. Rural tourism and ecotourism have also grown in popularity, as visitors seek authentic experiences and the natural beauty of the area.
In short, Álora is a fascinating place that has preserved its historic charm while adapting to the present. Its rich history, natural surroundings and local hospitality make Álora an attractive and welcoming destination for anyone looking to discover the authentic beauty of the Málaga region.

What Is the Caminito del Rey?
The Caminito del Rey: History, Transformation and a Unique Experience
The Caminito del Rey is one of the most impressive and famous trails in Spain. Located in the heart of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanesgorge in Málaga, this route runs along walkways suspended more than 100 metres above the ground, offering spectacular views and a direct connection with wild nature. Today, it is a landmark for adventure tourism in Andalusia, but its history is just as fascinating as its scenery.
The Beginnings: A Path Created Out of Necessity
The origins of the Caminito del Rey date back to the early 20th century. Between 1901 and 1905, a path was built along the rock face to provide access for workers at the El Chorro hydroelectric power station. This route made it possible to transport materials and monitor the water channels connecting the Gaitanejo and El Chorro reservoirs.
Years later, in 1921, King Alfonso XIII walked along the walkway during the inauguration of the Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir. Since then, the trail has been known as"The Caminito del Rey".
The Restoration Works: From Dangerous Path to World-Famous Icon
Over time, the old Caminito deteriorated until it became one of the most dangerous trails in the world. Its collapsed sections and extreme risk attracted daring adventurers, but also led to its closure to the public for several years.
In 2014, an ambitious restoration project began, respecting the original route as much as possible while ensuring safety and accessibility. New wooden walkways, modern anchoring systems and a spectacular suspension bridge crossing the gorge more than 100 metres above the ground were installed. In March 2015, the Caminito del Rey officially reopened, becoming a world-class example of heritage and tourism recovery.
The Caminito del Rey Today: Nature, Emotion and Heritage
Today, the Caminito del Rey is a safe, regulated route suitable for most visitors, provided the rules are respected. The trail combines history, biodiversity and adventure in an incomparable natural setting.
During the visit, travellers can enjoy impressive vertical cliffs, birds such as the griffon vulture and Bonelli’s eagle, canyons shaped by water over millions of years and breathtaking views.
Today, the Caminito del Rey is much more than a walkway: it is an unforgettable experience that connects visitors with the power of nature, the historical memory of Málaga and the thrill of walking suspended between mountains.
