Old images of Caminito del Rey
The Caminito del Rey is a narrow walkway, pinned along the steep walls within the El Chorro gorge in Málaga, Spain.
El Caminito del Rey: history, transformation and a unique experience
The Caminito del Rey It is one of the most impressive and famous trails in Spain. Located right in the heart of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, In Málaga, this trail suspended over walkways at over 100 metres high offers spectacular views and a direct connection with the wildest nature. Today it is a benchmark for adventure tourism in Andalusia, but its history is as fascinating as its landscape.
The beginnings: a path created by necessity
The origin of the Caminito del Rey dates back to the early 20th century. Between 1901 and 1905, a path was built hugging the rock face to facilitate access for the workers labouring at the Chorro hydroelectric power station. This walkway allowed for the transportation of materials and the monitoring of the water channels connecting the Gaitanejo and El Chorro reservoirs.
Years later, in 1921, the king Alfonso XIII walked the walkway during the inauguration of the Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir. Since then, the path has become known as “The King's Little Path”.
Rehabilitation works: from dangerous road to global icon
Over time, the old Caminito del Rey deteriorated, becoming one of the most dangerous walkways in the world. Its crumbling sections and extreme risk attracted daredevil adventurers, but also led to its closure to the public for years.
In 2014, an ambitious restoration began, respecting the original layout as much as possible while guaranteeing safety and accessibility. New wooden walkways, modern anchoring systems, and a spectacular suspension bridge crossing the gorge at over 100 metres in height were installed. In March 2015, the Caminito del Rey officially reopened, transforming into a global example of heritage and tourist recovery.
El Caminito del Rey today: nature, excitement and heritage
Currently, the Caminito del Rey is a safe, regulated route suitable for most visitors, provided the regulations are respected. The path combines history, biodiversity and adventure in an incomparable natural setting.
During the visit, travellers can enjoy impressive vertical walls, birds such as the griffon vulture or the Bonelli's eagle, canyons that have been shaped by water over millions of years, and breathtaking views.
Today, the Caminito del Rey is much more than a walkway: it is an unforgettable experience that connects visitors with the power of nature, the historical memory of Malaga, and the thrill of walking suspended between mountains.
